What's Next After AI Agents?
Ok, hear me out on this one.
AI agents are impressive. Genuinely. They can knock out repetitive, well-defined tasks without you lifting a finger. But, if you've been in the trenches with them, you've probably had at least one "wait, why did it do THAT?" moment.
That's the real limitation right now. It's not intelligence. It's trust.
Most business problems aren't clean, well-documented, step-by-step processes. They're messy. They require judgment calls. And an agent that can technically "get the job done" isn't worth much if you can't stand behind how it got there.
So here's where I think this is all headed. Digital Employees (DEs).
Picture this. You open an app, write a quick job description, and get back a list of DEs suited for the role - like scrolling candidates at a job fair. You ask questions. You find the right fit. You pay. You "hire" it.
Once it's on the job (on your device), the DE asks clarifying questions before diving in, the same way a good new hire would. Then it gets to work autonomously, checking back in when it needs more info, instead of just guessing, hoping, and hallucinating.
The best part? The DE is now tailored to your business, your use case, your expectations.
Need an IT dashboard? It figures out (or asks) what data matters, where it lives, and how to pull it in. It doesn't just spit out something that technically qualifies as "a dashboard."
DE not delivering? You fire it. Simple as that.
And this isn't just for one-off project ideas either. Think ongoing bookkeeping, marketing, dev work, customer support - DEs you keep on staff, digitally.
That's the shift we're building toward at Lucus Labs. Not "better agents." A fundamentally different way of thinking about digital labor and the Future of Work - one built on trust, not just task completion.
